Person of Interest: The ‘U’

As many of you may know, PR is one of my first loves, and I was fortunate to have interned at a music PR agency during my time at Penn State. It was there that I assisted with a music showcase, where I met today’s Person of Interest, music artist The ‘U’. We took the time to get even more acquainted for his POI interview, below.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I love God, my family, music, the Dallas Cowboys, NY Yankees, Netflix, comic books, the 90s, and of course Italian/Nigerian/Spanish Food!

How would you describe your sound and yourself as an artist?

The ‘U’ sound is an experience. Every song is a like a movie or a painting. I try to make abstract art that is both unique and timeless. I grew up in the 90s, a decade where it was important to be original, authentic, and interesting. Every song I make stands on is own as a vivid journey into my mind.

You and I first met at a music showcase at Penn State, where we both went to college, and I remember the crowd loving your set. What was it like being an artist within the Penn State music scene?

The Penn State Music scene was really two worlds. First, there were the artists/cover bands who usually performed downtown. The second, which I was apart of, were the real trend setters and originals who belonged to groups like SOMA and The Penn State Song Writer’s Club. We occasionally performed downtown but usually did house parties, campus events, open mics, showcases, and basements. That world I was a part of was an authentic, genuine music community and it helped shape and mold my sound and love for music.

Within your music career, what is the one thing that you are most proud of?

My two greatest accomplishments in my eyes was when I completed my first solo album #NoDaysOff (available on iTunes and everywhere now) and opening/performing with the legendary MC Lyte.

You are a multi-talented and multi-faceted person – what are your other interests and passions? What’s something we should know about you but don’t?

Aside from music, I am an aspiring sports journalist. I love sports debate shows like Undisputed and ESPN First Take, and I even write for my own sports/entertainment blog visionsofquest.blogspot.com. I’m also a student aide/SAT instructor/student mentor for children in New Jersey and New York. I absolutely love helping and working with the youth.
