Person of Interest: Dana Distortion

Welcome to the latest edition of Person of Interest, the first one of 2017! This POI is one of the coolest, most interesting people I’ve ever met. Our paths crossed at a Green Day concert this past fall.  We commiserated over the struggles of being short girls at concerts, when she introduced me to her revolutionary idea of bringing step stools to concerts for her photography – genius. Her photography work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Spin, and VH1 (to name a few places), but today we’re chatting about her latest project in fashion. Without further ado, meet Dana Distortion(pronounced “Dah-na”)!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Dana Distortion, I’m a Brooklyn-based photographer with a special kick for music and portrait photography. I know you’re gonna ask me what the Distortion is all about. Someone gave me that nickname when I was 14 years old, after the guitar effect. It stuck over the years and now it’s an inseparable part of my name. I even legally changed it recently.

What else??? Music is my life and that’s REALLY all you need to know about me.

Your brand new fashion line Distortion Unplugged is about to launch, which will feature your portraits, passes, and set lists on clothing – congrats!  What was the inspiration behind expanding to a new medium with your photography?

I was always a big lover of fashion, a big lover of photography, and needless to say, a big lover of music. I think music and fashion really go hand-in-hand, and I treat my photography as art so I think if people want to wear my photos, well that’s not a bad idea now, is it? With that said, my line is not only my photos, but also other things inspired by the world of music and photography, my life, music styles, lyrics, images, etc.

You must have photographed countless concerts – do you have a particular artist who you loved photographing the most?

Coldplay, hands down. They are just fun, colorful, and full of energy. I gotta say I became a bigger fan of their music after that first time I got to shoot them.

What is the process like when choosing which of your photographs to incorporate into your clothing?

It’s all about mixing and matching. Trying things out, having ideas in my head. Things that inspire me. It just comes to me. As it’s not only my photos, it is really anything that comes to mind. Then I try and see if it works as a piece of clothing. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t.

Do you have a personal favorite piece from the collection?

My favorite pieces are the Suicide Blonde tee and the shirt that is made from some of my photo passes called the All-Access tee. The All-Access was the first one I wanted to do and how I started with this whole clothing idea in the first place. I was really thrilled to see I was able to execute the design the way I saw it in my head. It’s almost like having a script you wrote coming to life. It’s really exciting and special.
