FRIEDA for generations has been on my Philly bucket list for some time now. So when I received an invitation to their tea, I was BEYOND thrilled. My pal Jaime and I met on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, excited for the prospect of enjoying a cafe neither of us had been to before. Located in Society Hill, you immediately feel welcomed walking into the open and airy FRIEDA.
We were greeted by Tina and Nahir, who showed us to our table and let us know that the only decision we had to make that afternoon was what type of tea we’d like (they have a fantastic tea selection!). We all sat together, and they explained the concept behind FRIEDA, which is simple – to reconnect generations. This cafe is all about connecting people from all different backgrounds, and they also employ people of all ages. They have a full calendar of events and classes, from knitting, to drawing and language classes. It’s a wonderful concept, and I hope we see more places like this pop-up! (Before you go to get some work done with your laptop, know that there is no WI-FI – but that is the point, after all!).
Tina explained what the numbers pictured above represent, which were unveiled for their recent 2.5-year anniversary. They depict their accomplishments they’ve achieved since their opening – from 23,000 muffins donated to 1,000,000 smiles given.
And where to begin with the food?! Absolutely everything was delicious and kept getting better and better. Each tea sandwich and pastry was out-of-this-world amazing. I would be remiss not to mention that the head chef studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. One of our favorites was a refreshing tomato gazpacho served between tea and dessert. Essentially everything there is homemade – there is even an entire shelf of homemade jams for purchase made by the FRIEDA staff.
They have an awesome breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch selection (menu here), and give them a call if you’re interested in afternoon tea!
Jaime is gluten-free and vegan, and they had plenty of options for her!
It would be very hard to leave FRIEDA and not be totally in love – from the food to the company, it is a must visit. It’s such a unique place that is so much more than a cafe.
I left feeling like this is a place where people will remember your name and will welcome you with open arms each time you go. I thoroughly enjoyed putting this post together, and I have to say, it gave me a renewed feeling for blogging. I cannot wait to go back.
