Beautiful – The Carole King Musical with the Kimmel Center

“You make me feel like a natural woman.”

“I feel the earth move under my feet, I feel the sky tumbling down.”

“Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call, and I’ll be there, you’ve got a friend.”

These are just a handful of iconic lyrics of songs that musical legend Carole King has composed over a seven-decade career. You can hear all of these songs, plus many more, in the hit musical Beautiful, based on the incredible life of King, which is currently playing at the Academy of Music.

Truthfully, I did not know much about Carole King, which I am very ashamed to say! However, I knew her music (who doesn’t?), but did not realize just how many hit songs she and her then-husband Gerry Goffin wrote. She even wrote her first big hit when she was still a teenager. Sarah Bockel plays the role of Carole with so much passion, vulnerability and spirit. The entire cast brought every song and time period to life, so much so that the audience felt transported back in time.

This musical took on two different meanings for me. One – I was in absolute awe of this incredible woman’s story, and how much she has accomplished in her life. Two – it was a stunning theatrical experience from start to finish. It was also very fun to hear the audience immediately get excited at a mention of one of her songs.

Beautiful is running until January 20, and performances are held at the Academy of Music. All I can say is, go see this gorgeous musical, and try your very best not to sing along to every song ;).

Thank you to the Kimmel Center for this incredible musical experience!
