Hello everyone, and welcome to a brand new week! They say spring is officially here, yet she is no where to be found. So, when spring finally decides to show herself, you can spend the days by exploring some of Philadelphia’s finest murals. There are literally thousands of murals in Philly – around 3,600 to be exact – each one more unique than the next. These incredible pieces of art are possible thanks to Philly’s Mural Arts Program, which was established to fix the city’s graffiti crisis. Today I wanted to share with you some of my favorite murals I’ve stumbled across in the City of Brotherly Love.
Start from Here, a stunning geometric masterpiece by Isaac Tin Wei Lin, is a newer mural which can be found on 13th and Race. One of my favorite things about Philly is turning a corner and bumping into an amazing piece of art, which is how I came across Start from Here. It’s one of those things that makes this city magical.
I actually had the pleasure of watching this mural by MOMO on 18th & Market come to life. Each day I passed by it, new colors, shapes and images would appear. Fun fact: it’s the tallest mural in Mural Arts history.
One of the most striking, poignant, and popular murals is actually an entire series by Steve Powers titled A Love Letter for You. You can get a fantastic view of these murals by riding on the Market/Frankford El, or by driving down Market Street between 45th and 63rd. These are a must see should you ever find yourself in Philly.
The Golden Rule of Mural Arts is “When we create art with each other and for each other, the force of life can triumph,” and I think this is evident in the amazing work they accomplish.
