Working With Your Wardrobe: Style Session with Susan

“Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting a part of yourself.” – Nina Garcia

HAPPY 2018 ALL! I hope you all had a restful and relaxing holiday season and feel recharged and ready for the new year.

While we’re on the topic, let’s chat about New Year’s resolutions ever so briefly. So many of our New Year’s resolutions involve enhancing and improving ourselves to be at our very best, whether that be in our professional or personal lives, health, side hustles, or even our style. This might even be one of your New Year’s resolutions: to put your best foot forward, feel confident about how you look every day and try to get out of your comfort zone – all things that can be achieved through style.

Enhancing your personal style doesn’t mean you have to break the bank; you can work with what you already have in your wardrobe. Personal stylist and Philadelphia ladyboss Susan Padron recently showed me how I can take what I already have in my closet and create some new outfits! I first met Susan at a photoshoot that she was styling, and let me tell you, she has such an eye for color, fit, outfit potential – basically all things style-related. Susan is all about supporting and empowering women through style, which I absolutely love.

Before we got started, we chatted all about our lives, favorite Bravolebrities, music (Susan is also a flutist!), and how I view my own personal style. While I love all things fashion, I can definitely use some advice, and Susan was there to help!

So how does a style session begin? Susan asked me to select several clothing items from my closet that I love but don’t know how to wear or wanted a fresh take on how to wear. I chose several items I wear to the office, like an olive green dress and a wrap, and for a night out, like a black dress and a faux fur jacket. I also showed Susan some accessories I like to wear and she showed me how I can incorporate them into more outfits.

Please tell me I’m not alone in the amount of black booties I own…

Susan also showed me how to mix different fabrics and patterns together, something I rarely ever do.

Susan paired some of my accessories with my selected pieces, like this black bell-sleeved dress from Gypsy Warrior. She added a crystal necklace and a pair of black combat boots for a goth glam look.

This olive green dress is a favorite of mine, but I wanted to spice it up a bit. Susan picked out some statement necklaces, scarves and shoes from my closet which go nicely together with the dress. She ultimately came up with an ideal office-to-happy-hour outfit! Both outfits can be worn with or without tights.

We love the back of the dress, but it still needed something more for the front

And last but not least, one of the biggest trends this season – faux fur colorful coats. I love this statement pink coat from Forever 21, but I struggle with outfit ideas. Susan suggested to go for a fun, but still casual look, pairing it with a white t-shirt, ripped denim jeans and white Converse sneakers, completed with a pair of over-sized shades. We called this the “celebrity airport” look; chic, but still statement-making. Don’t be surprised if you see this outfit on Insta soon!

Below is also one of my favorite looks from our meeting. The item I chose was the maroon, grey and black wrap from Tobi which I often wear with a dress to the office. Susan showed me what to wear with it to create a fun weekend brunch look.

Some other tips from Susan included not being afraid to try tucking in shirts, as it can transform an outfit, and to be fearless about wearing a statement piece, like a pair of stockings covered in skulls 😉 . She is truly the style expert!

I had the most fun afternoon with Susan, and I learned so much about my own personal style and how to enhance it for the new year. She was SO great to work with; it was amazing to see all of the new outfits I already had in my closet without having to buy anything! Check her out on Facebook and Instagram for more style inspo and learn how she can help you with your style!
