New Kid on the Block: Middle Child

Seeking an old-school, Philly diner experience? Or maybe you want to be surrounded by classic Eagles kelly green decor (who doesn’t)? Then it’s time to head to Middle Child in Washington Square. Inspired by classic diners and delis, the newly opened Middle Child serves up breakfast and lunch and brews up one of my favorites, ELIXR coffee. Dietary restraints? Not to worry, because there are vegan options and all of the food is totally nut-free. If you’re in a rush, take-out is available. Let’s dig in, shall we…

After reading a Zagat article, I discovered that the front shelves are lined with owner Matthew Cahn’s favorites pantry items, which are available for purchase.

Counter seating is available, which was quickly filled after taking this photo!

Val and I opted for the delicious, very filling, vegan Phoagie, with eggplant, avocado, bean sprouts, onions, pho sauce and chili paste on a Sarcone’s hoagie roll, and Kerry got the Ham-I-Am. I can confidently say I could eat the Phoagie every day for lunch, it was that good. We finished off with a very special treat – the Blintz Toast, with whipped cheese, blueberry-masala jam, lemon zest on toast. Unreal.

Don’t you love when your bag matches the decor?

It was a great way to spend a weekend afternoon before exploring more of Washington Square. I love the cozy, old-school diner vibe and feeling like I was transported back in time; Philly was missing a place like this. Even after just one visit, I think Middle Child is on its way to becoming a Philly staple. Definitely don’t overlook this middle child (sorry, I had to!).

Check out their ‘gram for even more deliciousness and let me know if you stop by!
