Sooo last week, a pretty awesome thing happened – I went to the Philadelphia premiere of the Crazy Rich Asians movie (!) and I’m here to tell you all about it. I’ll start off by saying that I’m a huge fan of the first two books (I still have to read the third) written by Kevin Kwan. The books are hysterical (truly laugh-out-loud funny) and heartwarming – there is something everyone will enjoy from them. I was planning on seeing the movie once it came out, so the invitation to see it in advance was a treat. I was so happy my pal Rebecca came all the way from NYC to join me, as she introduced me to the series.
The movie stars Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young, Awkwafina (hilarious) as Goh Peik Lin, along with many other amazing actors. This is also the first Hollywood studio film in 25 years to feature a predominately Asian cast. If you haven’t read the books yet, there’s still plenty of time to before the movie comes out. But even if you don’t read the books beforehand, you’ll still fully enjoy the movie.
It’s pretty amazing when everything you envisioned in a book looks exactly how you imagined it in a film – and that’s exactly what Crazy Rich Asians achieved. Everything I imagined came to life on screen, from the luxurious homes, enviable fashion and mouth-watering food. Trust me when I say that the wedding scene was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever witnessed in a movie. I laughed, I most certainly cried and I gawked over the fashion – oh the FASHION. I think any lovers of the book will also love the movie, and those who are new to it will also love it.
Afterwards we went to the after party at Assembly. We were lucky enough to meet the talented and beautiful Gemma Chan, who plays the fashion queen Astrid Leong in the film. And it was truly an honor to meet and speak with author Kevin Kwan and let him know just how much we love the books and movie.
Crazy Rich Asians opens nationwide August 15 (go see it!); watch the trailer below:
Thank you Warner Bros. for an unforgettable night!
