Philly Finds Vol. 56 – East Passyunk Day

It wouldn’t be right to begin this post and not acknowledge the horror that occurred on South Street this past weekend. I’m not sure what I can say that hasn’t already been said over, and over, and over, again. But it needs to change. And it needed to change yesterday.

Tattooed Mom shared a thread of resources, which I’ll share below:

Firstly, I hope your Pride is off to a lovely, fantastic, amazing start <3 I had such a cute East Passyunk day with my friend Ann, who recently moved back to Philly. East Passyunk may just be my favorite Philly neighborhood. And come to think of it, I really do need to do an East Passyunk round-up blog, I’ll get on that. BUT in the meantime, here’s a recap of our day.

Sabbatical Beauty

Our day began at the Bok Building for Philly-based company Sabbatical Beauty. All of their products are made in small batches here in Philadelphia. You may be familiar with the wonderful Sola, who has appeared on the blog before. She is working with the company, and shared some of her favorite products which include Bethany Charcoal Mask, Vacuum Cleansing Oil, and Asian Powerhouse Serum. I left with a few samples, and will provide updates on the results!

A Philly-based, woman-owned company? We love to see it.

Asian Powerhouse Serum & Vacuum Cleansing Oil – have been using for the past 3 days

IllExotics

Flora and fauna – what you’ll find at IllExotics. Immerse yourself in their jungle, where you’ll find tree frogs, lizards, chameleons, snakes, arachnids and more. A heap of exotic (hence the name) animals and plants. And if you’re in search of an easy-to-take-care-of monstera or spider plant, you’ll find those as well.

The glee that was experienced upon learning there are PATRICIA dart frogs!

Barcelona Wine Bar

It’s been a minute since I last visited Barcelona Wine Bar (4 years to be exact). But when the craving for tapas calls, you must answer. We split the aperitivo board, cucumber salad, croquetas, tile fish, empanadas, and albondigas. We were eating well. And just when we thought we couldn’t have another bite, we were treated to a new menu item, the eggplant caponata. With our spicy Bloody Mary’s along with our meal, it was a divine brunch.

Occasionette

Occasionette is one of my favorite shops in the city, and a place I’ll always recommend as a place to find a cute and unique gift. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the shelf of jelly bags in assorted colors. Green, blue, pink, purple – I needed one. And what is it about “jelly” accessories, be it bracelets, shoes, or bags? They have such power over us. All this to say, I did indeed purchase a mini, pink jelly bag. I needed it, and that’s all I can say about the situation.

She’s so cute and little and I LOVE HER 🥺

South Philly Awnings

We end this Philly Finds with an ode to the awnings of South Philadelphia. The enduring constants of Snyder Ave and Tasker Street. Although I have really no ties to South Philly, something about the awnings feels like home. Long may they stay.
