Philly Finds Vol. 76

Just in time for the end of summer – a brand spankin’ new Philly Finds.

How has your summer been going? Are we feeling ready for fall? I for one am, and have put out my pumpkin décor and purchased several fall candles last week. I’m ready. I also have some autumnal trips lined up, which I’m quite excited for.

Before we get into the finds, here are some random links to check out/some things I’ve enjoyed recently:

I’m currently reading Dolly Alderton’s memoir Everything I Know About Love. I’ve never come across a book I didn’t know that I needed so badly at that moment. This book sparked something inside of me, and also soothed something within me.

There are many gut-punching, heartbreaking, and revelatory moments and lines in this book. But there was one part in particular that really got me. I mean, really got me. The sister of the author’s best friend battled leukemia, and documented it on a blog. The book features a few lines of a poem she wrote, and I found the entire poem on another website. I implore you to read it.

Ok, now onto the finds!

Things to do:

The Lion King – now until September 10 at the Academy of Music

It’s no wonder why The Lion King has been on Broadway for over 20 years. And while it’s still at the Academy of Music, I hope that you’ll see it. This was my third time seeing the show, and it is just an absolute feat of a production. I’m blown away and utterly captivated every time. The man next to me and I cried for about a quarter of the first act, and during intermission we laughed together at our inability to keep it together. What can I say, the nostalgia got me.

Shofuso

Tucked away in Fairmount Park is the beautiful and serene Shofuso. This traditional style Japanese house and garden highlights Philly’s history of Japanese culture, and is a lovely escape from the city. I can only imagine how stunning it is in the fall. Visit for a moment of tranquility and stillness (and to feed the koi!). Tickets start at $14.

Kelly Green Block Party

Grab your Kelly Green Eagles Gear for the first ever, Eagles Kelly Green Block Party! Celebrate the long awaited return of Kelly Green on Fairmount Avenue surrounded by birds fans. This event is free for Eagles fans of all ages and does not require a ticket to attend. There will be Eagles players, alumni, cheerleaders, SWOOP and the Eagles Drumline, plus much more. Click here for more deats.

Where to eat:

Mish Mish, East Passyunk

When the new trendy restaurant comes to town, there’s always a slight hesitation. Will it be that good? Such was the case with Mish Mish, at least it was for me. But I kept hearing the same things, “It’s soooooo good,” and “You HAVE to go.”

So went I did – and it did not disappoint. In fact, it far exceeded expectations. The only thing better than the food was the service. I believe it’s a rotating menu, but you must get the string cheese. Make your reservation here.

Bao Nine

If you can dream up a bao bun combination, Bao Nine probably already has it. Mediterranean-inspired bao buns, Mexican-inspired bao buns – they have it all.

Agape Gourmet

For my Ocean City, NJ folks, this one is for you. A new specialty food store recently opened on Asbury Ave. Agape Gourmet has a massive selection of food products, and also serves food to go. This tuna sandwich called The Great White was fantastic.

And last but not least, a pic from Philly Mag’s Influencer Awards.

That’s all for now. Talk soon! xo
