A Haunting Melody: “Girl from the North Country” playing now at the Forrest Theater

“Girl from the North Country,” now playing at Philadelphia’s Forrest Theater now until March 10th, is a unique theatrical experience that defies easy categorization. While it isn’t your typical, feel-good musical, it offers a powerful and poignant glimpse into the lives of struggling individuals during the Great Depression.

The play, written by Conor McPherson and featuring the music of Bob Dylan, takes place in a Duluth, Minnesota boarding house on the brink of foreclosure. The residents, each facing their own hardships, find solace and connection in the shared experience of uncertain times.

Audiences can expect to hear Dylan classics such as “Forever Young,” “I Want You”, “Jokerman”, and “To Make You Feel My Love.”

While the narrative structure may feel unconventional, the strength of the production lies in the individual performances. The cast delivers exceptional performances, particularly Jennifer Blood, whose portrayal of Elizabeth Laine is nothing short of captivating. Her rendition of “Like a Rolling Stone” is a showstopper, showcasing both her vocal talent and ability to embody her character’s complexities. Her portrayal really was something special.

The music itself deserves high praise. The familiar melodies of Dylan’s songs, though not entirely tied to the plot, create a powerful atmosphere and evoke a sense of longing and resilience. It is important to note that this is not a jukebox musical where songs directly advance the story.

Think of “Girl from the North Country” as more of a play with music woven into the fabric of the narrative. It’s a show that will stay with you long after the curtain falls, prompting reflection on themes of hardship, hope, and the enduring human spirit.

If you’re looking for a traditional musical, this might not be the one for you. But if you’re open to a unique and thought-provoking theatrical experience with exceptional performances and music, then “Girl from the North Country” is worth checking out.
